With THE SWEETSHOP by your side, you’re not just discovering these locations, you’ll unlock the stories within them. We’ve spent decades scouting hidden gems and crafting scenes that make jaws drop. Let us show you the New Zealand we know and love.

CITIES

New Zealand’s cities each have their quirks and charm, from modern skyscrapers to historic landmarks. The main production hubs are Auckland, Wellington, and Queenstown.

Auckland seamlessly combines a harbour-side skyline, heritage buildings, volcanic peaks and sprawling beaches. As one of the main hubs of New Zealand’s screen industry, it’s home to some of the best crew in the game and world-class facilities including Auckland Film Studios, Kumeu Film Studios, and Studio West, offering everything you need to kick off your production.

Wellington may be small, but it packs a cultural punch. A UNESCO 'City of Film', the capital city has played host to blockbusters like ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ and offers top-notch studios backed by talented crew. Add some iconic harbour views and historic charm, and you’re set for a shoot that’s as creative as the city itself.

Queenstown is surrounded by some of the country’s most show-stopping scenery—think mountains, lakes, glaciers and fjords all within a short scenic drive. Its wildly versatile landscape makes it a no-brainer for productions chasing epic, natural backdrops. And it’s not just about the views, Queenstown’s growing network of top-tier crew and facilities has everything you need to deliver high-quality production in a setting you’ll never forget.

COASTLINES

New Zealand’s coastlines are the stuff of legend. From tropical white sand beaches, black volcanic shores, and rugged cliffs that practically demand a close-up. Take the hauntingly beautiful black sands of Karekare Beach, immortalised in 'The Piano', while Cathedral Cove's enchanting sea cave, as seen in 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian', feels like stepping straight into a fairytale.

Those are just the highlights. We know the hidden gems—the secret stretches of sand and quiet coves that’ll make your scenes unforgettable. Whether you’re after a setting for an intimate moment or an epic cinematic vista, we’ll help you find a backdrop that’s pure movie magic.

MOUNTAINS & GLACIERS

From the jaw-dropping Southern Alps to the volcanic peaks of the North Island, New Zealand’s mountain ranges are impossible to ignore. Snow-capped peaks, rugged ridges, and winding valleys have played starring roles in epics like ‘The Lord of the Rings' bringing unforgettable natural drama to the screen.

Then there are the fjords, with Milford Sound as the undeniable showstopper. Think sheer cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and mist-shrouded inlets that feel like something out of a dream. It’s no surprise 'Mission Impossible: Fallout' took to the skies here for some of its nail-biting aerial shots.

Oh, and let’s not forget the glaciers. Immense rivers of ice, set against lush forests, provide a contrast that’s striking on screen. Tasman Glacier’s surreal blue ice caves made an unforgettable appearance in 'Sweet Tooth Season 2'. If you’re chasing epic you’ve come to the right place. The Sweetshop has the connections and expertise to bring these natural wonders to your next projects, let’s make it happen.

FORESTS & NATIVE BUSH

Lush, green, and teeming with life, New Zealand’s forests are pure magic. On the West Coast ancient rainforests like those in Kahurangi National Park, transport you to another world with moss-covered trees and pristine streams. While the dense pines of Woodhill Forest played a starring role in provided the perfect setting for 'The Chronicles of Narnia'.

But it doesn’t stop there. Our native bushlands are something else entirely. With iconic silver ferns and mighty kauri trees, they bring an unmistakable Kiwi flavour to any story. Films like 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' captured the rugged, untamed essence of the bush, adding an edge of exploration and independence. We’ll help you tap into these diverse, evocative landscapes—navigating all the technical and cultural details to bring your vision to life.

LAKES

Our lakes are the definition of serene—mirror-like waters framed by jaw-dropping landscapes. Whether it’s the expansive beauty of Lake Taupo in the North or the rugged shores of Lake Wakatipu in the South, they offer endless possibilities. Peaceful retreat? Check. Epic open-water shot? Double check.

Lake Pukaki’s striking turquoise waters set the stage for 'The Hobbit', adding a touch of magic and wonder. Meanwhile, the shores of Lake Wakatipu gave 'Top of the Lake' its breathtaking grandeur. Whatever vibe you’re chasing—calm, dramatic, or downright otherworldly—our lakes deliver, every single time.

COUNTRYSIDE

Rolling hills, patchwork fields, and postcard-perfect farm settings, New Zealand’s countryside offers an authentic slice of rural life. Need proof? Hobbiton, nestled in Matamata’s lush farmland, brought the Shire to life in 'The Hobbit'.

For something more rugged, look to Central Otago’s vast beef and sheep stations, which delivered all the grit and isolation 'The Power of the Dog' needed to channel the Wild West. And if you’re after something with a bit of edge, A24’s 'X' found just the right eerie nostalgia in our farmland. From green hills to dramatic skies, New Zealand’s countryside offers warmth, timeless beauty, and just the right amount of mood to elevate any story.
